PROTECTING THE ENVIRONMENT

We are committed to protecting the environment through the application of effective energy efficiency, reduction of emissions, use of renewable fuels and recycling of materials to meet these goals.

Our aim is to deploy our technical expertise to reduce the quantity of energy your organisation needs - whether that be in the form of heating or cooling, light, or power for business processes. In return, we seek reward for the service through a share in the resultant savings we achieve for you.

Energy management puts our business right at the heart of achieving real action on sustainable development. We believe we can help your organisation achieve sustainable growth without compromising our planet's scarce resources.

By controlling unnecessary energy consumption, you and your organisation are responsible for fewer polluting and greenhouse gas emissions - making a direct impact on climate change. Using only what you need not only ensures the security of future generations but also makes sound financial sense. So by placing a value on the carbon emissions we can save on your behalf we provide a real, quantifiable measure for the solutions we devise.

Increasingly, investment in more energy-efficient systems that produce less CO2 is an economically attractive choice, not just a sign of environmental responsibility.

Helping UK customers save 370,000 tonnes of CO2 from going into the atmosphere every year

Our caring approach for the environment means that the energy and utilities we manage on your site are operated in strict compliance with legislation and to the best achievable efficiency. By doing this we optimise environmental performance and minimise any impact on the surroundings.

Emissions Trading
In 2004, we concluded our third successful year of trading within the UK Emissions Trading scheme. As the only Energy Services Company in the scheme, and since its inception, we have reduced overall emissions by 38,380 tonnes of CO2, across 130 customer sites, helping to directly diminish the impact of climate change. In 2004 we achieved a further 19,000 tonnes of emissions savings.

Our continuing programme to achieve environmental management ISO14001 status on large sites has resulted in four large scale combined heat and power plants achieving registration - these sites are the Nottingham District Heating Scheme, Kemfine at Grangemouth, Syngenta at Huddersfield and AstraZeneca at Macclesfield. These registrations contribute to Dalkia's worldwide Environmental Programme

On a global perspective, Dalkia has the largest number of individual installations falling under the control of one operator at 238 installations with a Greenhouse Gas Emissions Permit in the name of Dalkia, with an annual allocation of ~19.25m t CO2.

IPPC
Dalkia has an important role to play in ensuring good environmental performance of our clients' sites. A number of our clients operate under Integrated Pollution Prevention & Control (IPPC) licences, and Dalkia operates and maintains equipment vital to the environmental performance of our clients. Through pollution control, energy efficiency and waste management, we help our clients achieve their sustainability goals. We also assist in making improvements where possible, through identifying opportunities through our knowledge of best practice and cross-industry experience.

Research

There are technological barriers to be overcome if we are to achieve progress in the environmental sphere and in sustainable development. The role of Research and Development is to identify and resolve these difficulties so that we can tackle the challenges of tomorrow.

R & D plays a key role in driving forward our activities and business model, by developing new solutions and foreseeing environmental and health issues. It plays an essential part in:

Optimizing the environmental quality of our services as well as the safety of our facilities and services (through technical improvements to reduce costs, limit the impact of our activities, raise healthstandards, etc.)
Adapting our businesses to global changes (by anticipating environmental issues and protecting the environment)

Dalkia's international energy research and development capabilities are grouped at the Centre for Environmental, Energy and Waste Research and Testing,(CREED) where innovation is the aim in developing new energy resources.
